Nike + iPod records the time, distance, pace and calories burned in real time as you run (or,in my case,power walk). You can track those results on an iPod Nano and,after connecting the Nano to a computer,on the Nike website (nikeid.com).Nike + iPod was introduced at a press conference in May as the first product from a partnership between Apple and Nike.But it became available in stores only last week. It's sold at Apple Stores,Niketown and other places you'd buy iPods or running wear and is based on the idea that music and exercise go hand in hand.The kit itself costs just $29.But you'll have to supply Nike+-ready running shoes such as the $100 Air Zoom Moires I wore.Seven styles of shoes will be available by the end of July,Nike says,for $80 to $110 a pair. Of course,you'll also need a Nano ($149 and up); the kit does not work with other iPod models.You won't break a sweat tuning up for your high-tech workout.Nike + iPod consists of a single sensor you tuck under the insole into a pocket in the special footwear on the left shoe, plus a small receiver you attach to the dock connector at the bottom of a Nano.The sensor is a little bigger than a quarter and about as thick as a stack of four quarters.You really don't feel the sensor under your foot. the sensor and connector wirelessly talk to each other to record each step.Once everything is in place,you'll notice a new Nike + iPod menu on the Nano screen.You select it and press the iPod's menu button to customiz a new workout according to specified goals.You can select time,distance (from 3K to a full marathon — or any length you have in mind) or calories burned. Choose "basic" if you prefer an open-ended workout.You can measure results in kilometers or miles
You should also enter your weight to more accurately measure burned calories.You can calibrate the kit to improve accuracy,though it's not required.Accuracy can be affected by gait,running surface, incline or temperature.You also choose the iPod music to accompany your run.Apple is selling Nike+ Workout playlists at the iTunes Music Store,combining music plus coaching tips from the likes of marathoner Alberto Salazar.I ran to an electronic music mix available on iTunes from The Crystal Method.Nice touch:You can designate any tune on the iPod as a motivational"power song"you summon any time you're feeling fatigued,facing a daunting hill or in need of a boost.Periodically during your run,a male or female voice indicates your progress.You can request the audio feedback at any time by pressing the center button.The volume on songs decreases momentarily,then gets pumped up again after you've gotten your feedback.By default,the sensor is always on.You can leave it in the shoe when you aren't running.The battery cannot be replaced,but Apple CEO Steve Jobs told me the goal is to have the sensor battery outlast the shoe.You can put the sensor to sleep (with a pen or paper clip) before,say,boarding a plane.Oddly,my biggest initial challenge had little to do with the kit; I ran with an optional $29 Nike Sport Armband but had trouble keeping the iPod earbuds in my ears.Nike is selling various clothes to help with"cord management,"some with special pockets for the iPod.I had better luck testing the kit on a treadmill at my gym with my own Shure earbuds.(Extra motivation:By coincidence,Nike pitchman Lance Armstrong,who is contributing a recommended playlist on iTunes,happened to be on the TV screen as I worked out.)Nike + iPod inexplicably paused twice during the workout. Each time,I was able to press the center button to resume.At the end of my session,the voice of none other than Armstrong came through the iPod congratulating me for breaking my personal record in workout time.In some ways,Nike + iPod leaves you begging for more. I'd love it to monitor your pulse and heart rate.But then,I'm guessing it would cost more than $29.I also wonder if Apple might add a GPS component so you could monitor where you're running,instead of just how long.That,too,would add to the cost—and complexity.Also,the nikeplus.com website could be friendlier to navigate.Moreover,while it does display graphs of your runs,it would be nice to be able to type in a few notes to indicate,say,what the weather was or how you were feeling during workouts.Still,you can establish goals through the site(such as how many times you want to run over a particular period)and set distance,speed or other challenges for up to 50 friends you invite via e-mail.I'll have to do a lot more training before I invite anyone to compete.Having the Nike + iPod kit at least makes it more fun.88888
